Still Living in BVI

I am so inspired by Miss Mermaid. I started reading her blog many years ago, on StormCarib. She always makes me laugh out loud...good for heart health! So, I still live in BVI, in fact, I live on Frenchman's Cay which is where I believe Miss Mermaid used to live before she moved over to Cane Garden Bay, and then recreated her life in Florida. I have a friend who has shared with me that she knows who Miss Mermaid is, but she has not revealed her identity. I will also not reveal my identity, as I think that was 25% of the fun of Miss Mermaid.

My intention with this bloglet is to 1) honor Miss Mermaid, and 2) continue to bring a wacky sense of life in de islands to all of you faithful readers. Dear Miss Mermaid, if you disagree with my approach, or it impinges in anyway on your earnings, please let me know right away, and I will cease and desist. I just want you to know I want to honor your spirit.

I am lucky to live with a view of the Sir Francis Drake Channel, so I can report on wind speed and wave height. Lately, since November 6, 2013, the channel has been very choppy and there are chilly winds. More than the usual Christmas winds...one has to wear rash guards (at least) when going in water.  The waves on BOTH sides of the island are high. When I returned, it seemed all the beaches had disappeared. Long Bay had no beach right up to the wall. Smuggler's had little beach and lots of sand flies.

Global climate change? Indeed.

Still, folks here seem intent on throwing styrofoam to-go food cartons, plastic bottles, and plastic bags on to the side of the road, and even into the water. Duh! Guess what? No fish to eat if you do that! At least most grocery stores here in BVI have eliminated plastic bags and many, many companies are giving away reusable bags made from recycled materials for people to use for grocery shopping. Now, if we could just get people to use stainless steel water bottles and eliminate plastic water bottles....

There is a tremendous dissonance in BVI between the young people under age 35, and the oldsters who still run the government. The young know about social networking, and the environment. The old are barely literate, and want to develop golf courses in mangrove nurseries, and large hotels in fragile areas. So, the time will come when right will win out, but it might take too long.

Signing off with a sunset,
